HAZARDOUS AREAS
What is a hazardous Area?
Many liquids, gases
and dusts which are generated, processed, handled and stored in industry are
combustible and may become explosive given the right conditions. An area in
which an explosive atmosphere could be expected to be present is known as a
hazardous area. If a source of ignition with sufficient energy is present at
the same time as an explosive atmosphere, the explosive mixture will burn rapidly
with considerable force, resulting in unwanted consequences.
Examples of a
hazardous area include (but not limited to):
Spray painting booths
Batching Plants
Fuel Stations and
Refineries
Grain Silo
Flour Mill
Sugar Refinery
Chemical Handling
and Storage Facilities
Plastic Factory
